Taiwanese K, Week 5, 2-22-09

  • 3/15 Midterm test. We'll evaluate lessons 1-5.
  • Please tell me 5 of your child's favorite Taiwanese songs.

Teacher Amy checked homework. Our children were proud they could "write" Taiwanese.

We started with playing "number relay"(數字接龍). Not only the children needed to say the numbers, but they also needed to have a smart brain to match the correct digit. Our kids still need time to practice this game.

We read and sang SiQfti 「小弟」, and did the exercise in the textbook. We also invited everyone to the stage to act the given expression, like hvoahie(歡喜)、siuxkhix (生氣)、khaux/hao (哭), etc. The funny thing is, when they acted khaux, they all had a smile on their face!

Then I told a story 「烏鴉和狐狸」 to reinforce the importance of being patient.

We continue the Taiwanese Alphabets: t (tauxhu 豆腐), th (thox 兔), n (niaw 貓), l (lok 鹿). The audio recording for consonants is:

At last we did ㄤ仔標。Every child had to read them to me before they got their prize: a glowing star. 

Homework are:

  • Write 5 times of tauxhu, thox, niaw, lok
  • Recognize flashcards of lessons 1-4
  • Listen to the CD and learn to sing lessons 1-4

Mandarin G2, Week5, 2-22-09

  • 3/22舉行華語演講/朗讀比賽

今天終於所有小朋友都到齊了!

我們先小考,結束第九課,接著進入第十課「麻雀」。 我介紹這課的文體是詩歌,押ㄚ韻,然後我們把課文念一遍,知道麻雀歡迎朋友有空到他們家泡泡茶,就像我們學校裡的「山水亭」一樣,於是我們實地探訪了「山水亭」,學學怎麼樣泡茶,結果受到山水亭主人周媽媽和周伯伯的熱情款待。小朋友很幸運的喝了兩種薄茶:花茶和綠茶,還吃了好多餅乾、乾果、和酸梅,更幸運的吃到愷菱媽媽親手做的什錦巧克力,害我都想留在那裡泡茶就好,別回去上課了!Tongue out

各位家長請別擔心我讓小朋友喝茶,我先告訴他們小朋友其實不應該喝茶,因為茶裡有咖啡因,會刺激他們的神經,但是我們周媽媽的茶葉都是上上之選,她又為小朋友泡得特別淡,主要讓他們淺嚐味道就好,所以請各位家長放心,那兩小杯茶的咖啡因還遠遠比不上一杯珍珠奶茶的量。我問小朋友他們比較喜歡哪一種口味,大部分都喜歡花茶;我問他們喝茶和喝開水有什麼不同?他們說比較香,Ezra說了一個很實際的答案:比較苦,可見他們還不懂得「苦盡甘來」的道理。 Mandy說媽媽在家也喜歡泡茶,看來Mandy很快就可以幫媽媽泡茶了!

回到教室後,我先說了「烏鴉和狐狸」的故事,緩和小朋友的情緒,再次強調「小不忍則亂大謀」的重要性,然後我們教了第十課的生字和字卡,結束今天的課程。

Taiwanese K, Week 4, 2-15-09

Teacher Amy checked homework. Not having school last Sunday made some kids forgot what homework was and whether they did it or not. It was human nature. But when I started class, they all remembered what we taught last time!

I reviewed numbers from 1 to 100. It was boring to say the similar words for so many times, but it also reinforce their memory and improved their pronunciation by repeating words.

Then I told a story: 群鳥學搭窩 to teach the children be patient and focus. Again, I spoke in both Mandarin and English to be sure all the kids understand the meaning. A girl told me that she liked me to tell stories. I said I would try to tell more stories in the future.

We reviewed lesson 3: A'Go khix sarmpo. Most of the kids could sing the song. Then I taught a cute song 「小胖哥」。Everyone has their candle to blow at the end of the song.

I taught lesson 4: SiQfti小弟 (Little Brother). Vocabularies are: paktor iaw腹肚餓 (hungry)、ciaqpar食飽 (full)、chiQx-mimy笑微微 (smile)、gyn’afmih囝仔物 (toy)、hvoahie歡喜 (happy)

Today we started learning Taiwanese Alphabets. Four alphabets were introduced to the class: p (pax 豹), ph (phQef 信), m (mi 麵), b (bQ’ar 帽仔), in which x means low tone, f means high tone, and r is shouting tone. Please refer to this website for details: http://wdcts.org/TaiwaneseMaterial/mltalphabets.htm

Mandarin G2, Week 4, 2-15-09

  • 華語演講/朗讀比賽訂於3/22舉行。欲參加演講比賽者請自行擬稿,限時2分鐘。學校會於這兩週內提供5-7篇講稿給參加朗讀比賽者回家練習。比賽細節及規則有待校方再公布。 

最近天氣忽冷忽熱,感冒的人特別多,我一再叮嚀小朋友要常洗手,避免病從口入。

歡迎 Daniel 歸隊,他說台灣很好玩,可惜他像 Justin 上次回台灣一樣有點食物過敏,引起眼睛周圍紅腫,Jessica 的媽媽說 Jessica 的妹妹也有在台灣食物過敏的經驗,這個我就不知道該如何預防了?

我們先複習、小考「朋友都想玩」,然後我講了一個耐心的故事:群鳥學搭窩,聽完後希望小朋友上課不要沒事就愛到洗手間逛逛。別的小朋友我不知道啦,我們 Justin 一定會在出門前大約1點我會叫他先上廁所,可是每次上課上到2點左右,他看別人去廁所,他也說要去,真不知道男生廁所有什麼好玩的東東?希望聽了這個故事後,他們上課能更專心。

接著我們念第9課課文,不知道是小朋友回家都認真唸了3遍,還是我說唸得最好最大聲的3位小朋友有獎勵,今天居然每位小朋友都唸得很好,害我沒辦法決定,最後還是由認字卡比賽來分出勝負,Jonah, Annika 和 Jessica 得到了情人節的籃球卡片,回去可以玩桌上投籃。

對話部份我徵求小朋友自願到台上念給大家聽,結果幾乎每個人都舉手了,我就讓他們一對一對的上台念,連最小的 Ryan 都能不靠我的任何幫助,把他的部份一字不差的唸完,我好欣慰!事後問 Ryan 的爸爸,原來 Ryan 在家真的很認真的把課文讀了3遍哦!我們不能小看這積沙成塔的力量,如果每位小朋友每週都能按部就班做好回家功課,穩扎穩打,他們的中文程度一定會提升的! 

我們還學了「…一邊…一邊…」的句型,我讓每位小朋友都造一個句子給我聽,造好的人就去玩桌上投籃。

下課前我一再提醒他們先去洗手再去吃點心,希望他們都照做了!

Taiwanese K, Week 3, 2-1-09

  • No school next week (2/8). School resumes on 2/15.
  • Thanks to Teh-Lin (Eric and Jason's mom) helped in the classroom today.

After checking and reviewing homework, we learned counting from 1 to 100 in Taiwanese. All of them could already count to 10. I taught them to count by 10s (xx zap). After they were familiar with the 10th digit, they add the ones to form the whole number (xx zap xx). For example: 56 reads "go zap lak".

We sang 飛機 and 一陣大雨 to bring back their memory of thviterng 天頂 (sky) and toaxho 大雨 (rain). Then I told a story about 韓信 to deliver the spirit of this month's virtue「忍耐」(self-countrol, be patient, tolerance, etc.)。I told the story in both English and Mandarin, so every child understood and was very impressed by 韓信's self-control ability. I also reviewed with them the 5 steps their school counselor taught when dealing with someone annoying: Ignore, Move away, Talk friendly, Talk firmly, Tell an adult for help. Hanna memorized every singly word!

Then we move to lesson 3: A’Go khix sarmpo 阿五去散步 (A’Go goes for a walk). We did the exercise in the textbook, and reviewed flashcards.

Finally we did the craft 「我的愛心」。The kids loved it and decorated their heart beautifully. Some of them have younger siblings. I suggested them give the heart to their baby sister or brother for they couldn't get any valentine from school. Thus, you would be their "first" valentine!

Homework are:

  • 學習單複習一 (What tool does the little brother need to take out the numbers from paper? Cut and paste your answer and color the numbers.)
  • Review flashcards of lessons 1-3
  • Listen to the CD and learn to sing「阿五去散步」 

    There's no class next week. I'll meet you again on 2/15.

    Mandarin G2, Week 3, 2-1-09

    • 下週(2/8)停課一次 。2/15照常上課。
    • Welcome back, Ezra!

    上課收發作業後,我們先小考「超次結排汽」五個字。原以為這些字筆畫不少,小朋友應該不太會寫,結果他們很聰明,會把每個字拆成部件記起來,寫得又快又好。

    二月的德目是「忍耐」,我說了韓信「跨下之辱」的故事,小朋友聽得津津有味。我說「忍耐」可以解釋成 self-control 和 be patient。順便跟他們複習學校輔導老師教的「處理討厭者」的五個步驟:Ignore, Move away, Talk friendly, Talk firmly, Get an adult for help,想不到有小朋友背得滾瓜爛熟。

    今天我們進入第九課「請朋友吃飯」。我們先玩遊戲,規則就像「老師說」一樣,只是把「老師說」改成「請」,我讓做錯的小朋友上來當「主人」,結果後來大家都故意做錯,喜歡當主人,拉都拉不下來!

    接著靜下來念課文,學寫生字「朋、友、東、玩、心、想、怎、只、每、都、半、菜」。有鑑於他們都在「畫」字,這次我強制他們先看著我板書,一邊書空練習,結束後才能低頭寫在簿子裡,希望能改進他們的筆順。 

    最後我再把字卡拿出來,從第九課複習到第一課,可以感覺到他們前面的字比較熟,可能是剛開學時比較新鮮,也比較認真吧!
