Last week I forgot to mention that we'll have 學業優良獎(outstanding award) and 全勤獎(full attendance award) in the end of the school year. The outstanding award will be given based on the student's performance in learning and effort. The full attendance award is allowed two excused absence in the year. It certainly can be achieved by parents' support.
Today we sang 「朋友歌」as an ending for our virtue of September「合群」(Teamwork)。
We reviewed 「學校草好高」before quiz. I let some kids come up and write words on the blackboard while others were judges to check the order of the strokes. Kids like to be the judge and criticize others' mistakes. By correcting and being corrected by others, all kids should be reinforced by the correct order of strokes.
We practiced reading and conversation for lesson 2「我的學校好」。 Then the fun part began! I grouped the kids to Team A and Team B to compete with the flash card recognition. I called a phrase and the team who found and raised the card first won. Team A figured out their own strategy for this game: They distributed all the cards to their members so everyone only guarded 3-4 cards. They clearly knew what words at hands so when I called the words, they could raise their cards in no time. I am very proud they utilized their wisdom and teamwork. Thanks to Nai'a and Mandy for sharing with us their flash cards.
Homework is:
We'll have a quiz next time on words: 拉、手、同、說、話。Please have your child be familiar with writing them.
Thank you and see you next week!

The outstanding award will be given based on the student's performance in learning and effort. The full attendance award is allowed two excused absence in the year. Today I reviewed the homework for last 3 weeks with every child. Some kids had very memorable family pictures (thanks to mom and dad!). Some had loving authentic drawing. They were all very proud to introduce their family members to me.
Then the fun part began! I grouped the kids to Team A and Team B to compete with the flash card recognition. I showed a card and the one who raised hand first and answered correctly in Taiwanese won a point for their team. All the kids were so focused and quiet. At the end every child got to "poke" a prize from the 「戳戳樂」(poking fun).
I also taught lesson 4: Toxngbudhngg 動物園 (The zoo). The words we learned were: toaxchviu大象(elephant)、viu’ar羊仔(sheep)、hor虎(tiger)、ty豬(pig)、khoghii鱷魚(crocodile)、bQbQea-hiim無尾熊(koala)、logtQo駱駝(camel)、bea馬(horse).

Today while we were waiting in the hallway for the classroom, Teacher Amy lead the kids playing "Duck, duck, goose". Then they sang the songs of 「老師好」and「媽媽你是我的最愛」with body movement. They were so cute! A boy said he really liked「媽媽你是我的最愛」. I told him we'll perform this on Mother's Day Party.
Perhaps parents needed a break after meeting with Teacher Guhhan
??? Except for Aaron's mom none stayed in the classroom for my Back to School Day
. Well, I know some of you are also school teachers and some needed to look after younger siblings, so you couldn't stay
. Please feel free to contact me whenever you have concerns about your child's learning of Taiwanese.
We'll teach Book 1 in this semester and continue Book 2 next semester. By reciting and singing the songs kids learn pronunciation and vocabularies. This year we target learning 120 Taiwanese words. I'll teach more than that and, of course, our children will forget some. So about memorizing 5 words a week is good.
Homework usually is a page of 學習單 and making/recognizing flash cards. Please have your child listen to the CD at home to be familiar with this language.
We have all the kids today. We continued the virtue「合群」(Teamwork) and I talked about friendships.
Then we learned lesson 3 「阿爸真疼我」Apaf cyn thviax'goar (Daddy loves me so much!). The words we learned were: phahkiuu拍球 (bounce a ball)、khvoarzheq看冊 (read a book)、oextoo畫圖 (draw a picture)、ao zoar拗紙 (paper folding)、thiaobuo 跳舞 (dancing)、chiQx-hahaf笑哈哈 (laughing)、puun pyn’ar吹拼仔 (play flute)、chid tQh’ar拭桌仔 (mop a table)、ak’hoef沃花 (watering flowers)、chviuokoaf唱歌 (singing).
Sound recording (please double click the triangle):
Before we read the text, a student already could sing the song. He asked me to play CD. I believe many of them have already heard of the song at home. This will help them increase learning interests and learn faster.
We did paper folding today. It was not easy for their tiny hands, but they did it! I believe exercising hands will help developing brain growing.
Homework for this week are:
Thank you and see you next week!

Today we started with Back to School Day. Thanks to the parents/grand parents of Nai'a, Katherine, Ryan, Justin, and Jonah joined us. I know some of the parents couldn't attend because they are also school teachers or needed to look after younger siblings outside. Please feel free to let me know whenever you have concerns about your child's Mandarin learning.
There are 12 lessons in our textbook. I will teach them in a year: average out two weeks for a lesson. Usually I'll teach vocabularies and go over the text content in the first week. We'll review word phrases (flash card) and other activities of the lesson in the second week.
Homework schedule is also very regular. First week is 習作A, second week is 習作B, the word book can be completed in either week. If you feel writing is too much for your child, please adjust by yourself. I would focus on their word recognition at this stage. I handed out the list of word phrases for volume II. There are total 112 phrases we'll learn this year.
After the parents left, we started our class. As usual none of my students was absent. We continued the virtue「合群」(Teamwork) . I talked about friendship.
We had quiz after we reviewed words on the blackboard. I didn't wipe out the words. Some kids were very proud that they didn't need to peek on the blackboard to get score of 100. Some kids still needed to copy from the blackboard, but I know they were learning!
We went through the strokes practice for the following words: 學、校、樹、高、草、悄、話、同、手、拉。They were very pround to learn 「學」and「樹」such complicated words.
We still used popcorn reading to read the text. This way will train the kids respect others and stay focused.
At the end of the class kids reminded me to play 「戳戳樂」(poking fun). They really liked to try their luck. To my surprise that EVERY child poked with a word could read it correctly. I am very proud of them.
Homework are:
We'll have a quiz next time on words: 學、校、草、好、高。Please have your child be familiar with writing them.
Thank you and see you next week

* Dear parents: Next week is Back to School Day. I'll talk about my teaching goal and plan in the first 10 minutes of the class. Please attend and provide me with your suggestions and comments. Thank you.
Today We have Aaron, Annika, Elizabeth, Emily, Eric, Hanna, Jacob, Jason, Maxine, Samuel, Yen-ui (Seth), and Vicky.
We continued the virtue「合群」(Teamwork) and I explained the proverb 「三個臭皮匠勝過一個諸葛亮」(Two heads are better than one).
Then we reviewed lesson 1 「老師好」Lauxsw HQr (How are you, Teacher!). Our kids could sing the song and recognized the flash cards very well. We moved on to lesson 2 「媽媽你是我的最愛」Mamaf lie si goar ee zoea aix (Mommy, I love you more than anything!). Kids already knew this song and were very happy to come up to stage to perform it. The words we learned were: ve'ar 嬰仔 (baby), paktor 腹肚 (tummy), seakaix 世界 (world), sQeahaxn 細漢 (little), simkvoaf 心肝 (heart), mamaf 媽媽 (mommy), papaf 爸爸 (daddy), hviati-cymoe 兄弟姐妹 (siblings), akofng 阿公 (grandpa), amar 阿嬤 (grandma).
Sound recording (please double click the triangle):
One thing very funny was that I used a pucture of a pregnant woman to represent "tummy". When I asked:"Do you have a tummy?" All the boys replied:"No"!
By the end of the class we made a "Thank you" card. Our kids loved doing craft. Two of our parents will not see your child's card in their bag, because your child was very generous to send me their card and wished me a happy Teacher's Day. Wow, they did think ahead!
Homework for this week are:
Thank you and see you next week!

They recognized the words and phrases learned already. We also had the quiz after we reviewed the words. Most kids did very well. At the end of the class we played 「戳戳樂」(poking fun). Some kids poked the hole and got stickers, while some got the words to read!

Today is the first day of Taiwanese School. We have Aaron, Alana, Annika, Emily, Eric, Hanna, Jason, Maxine, Samuel, Yen-ui (Seth), and Vicky. After having the delicious traditional Taiwanese shaved ice, every child was pretty content and therefore behaved very well in class.
The virtue for this month is 「合群」(Teamwork). We played the chopsticks game -- It's easy to break a chopstick, but it's a mission impossible for them to break the whole bunch in one shot. Everyone had a turn to do the "experiment". They understood they were a team and would stand beside each other.
Class started with their self-introduction. Everyone came to stage to introduce themselves:
Then we taught Lesson 1 「老師好」Lauxsw HQr (How are you, Teacher!). The vocabulary we learned are: lauxsw老師(teacher), hagsefng學生(student), sioxngkhQx上課(in class), haxkhQx下課(recess), hauxtviuo校長(principal), thagzheq讀冊(study), zapof gyn'ar查埔囝仔(boy), zabor gyn'ar查某囝仔(girl), viuu羊(sheep), gauzar賢早(good morning).
Sound recording (please double click the triangle):
We went through the text and sang the song 「老師好」Lauxsw HQr. Some kids were very keen to learn the song and dance. I found a couple already memorized the song by the end of the class! Humm, I have some talented kids here!
Homework for this week are:
I hope that is enough for our children by now. Please help them review what we learned today often, especially the part about themselves. They can use it in every Taiwanese speech.
Thank you and see you all next week!
